Every page of this (slightly too long) book is suffused with the struggle to comprehend, without condescending. Mutsuki Mockett tries to achieve the near impossible: to spend months travelling through middle America with an itinerant wheat harvesting crew, debating with them about God, race, history and genetically modified food, without alienating them or betraying her soul in the process.

American Harvest is a travelogue, but of a curious sort: The people with whom Mockett spends the most time are fellow travelers—harvesters making their way up from Texas into the Pacific Northwest. So the book is less a study of any one geographic place (or even region) and more a study of the harvesters themselves and the class they come.

Literate travels in the forgotten American hinterlands. Mockett (Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye, etc.) is a child of “the coasts: seventeen years in California, four years of college in New York City, more years of ping-ponging between the East and West Coasts,” the kind of person likely to think of the territory in between as flyover country.
